[Also in Division F2] An overriding manual drive for a normally motor-driven cam-shaft (13) of a sequential timer switch, for programming electrical appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, comprises a control knob 11 rotatable on, but axially fast with, the shaft (13) and axially depressable to engage facial ratchet clutch teeth 22 thereon with co-operating facial ratchet clutch teeth 40 of an axially fixed hub 23, the latter being connected to rotate with the shaft, by a pin and slot 31, so that depression and rotation of the knob 11 rotates the hub 23 and hence the shaft. To prevent damage to the appliance and/or the timer switch, the clutch 22, 40 is operative in one rotational direction only and the axial movement of the shaft (13), along with the control knob, opens a switch such as 46 to break the timer electrical circuit. The shaft is retained in depressed and normal positions to which it is pushed and pulled by the knob by a hairpin spring 33 located in a hub slot (34) and snap-engageable with either of two shaft grooves (38). The shaft (13) carries electrically non-conductive cams 45 having peripheral cam tracks actuating follower switches 50. A motor 42 bolted or riveted to the rear wall 41 of the switch normally intermittently drives the shaft (13) through a usual gear and escapement mechanism and pinion and gearwheel 43, 44.
