Abstract

Powdered seaweed is produced by subjecting coarsely-crushed dry seaweed to turbulent gas-flow whereby the cell-structure is destroyed and the protoplasm released, the process being continued until a powder is produced having a particle-size of between 0.1m and 5m . At this particle-size the material can readily be coloidally dispersed in water. The dry powder can be incorporated into farinaceous products for human consumption to the extent of 1-5% by weight. For animal consumption, it may be mixed with flours used for animal-feeds in proportions varying from 1-10% by weight, depending on the kind of animal. The sea-weed-genera employed are Fucus, Laminaria, or Lithothamniou.ALSO:Powdered seaweed having a particle-size of 0.1m to 5m , and derived from the genera Fucus, Laminaria, and Lithothamnion, is employed as a cosmetic or toothpaste, or for external application as an embrocation or an addition to therapeutic baths. Antiphologistic pastes may contain 50% of the powder derived from equal parts of Laminaria and Fucus, the remainder being a kaolin-glycerin carrier. For toothpaste, powder derived from Lithothamnion Calcaveum is preferred.
