Abstract
A synthetic sponge is formed by ageing a liquor derived from the digestion of wood pulp (or other source of cellulose) with carbon bisulphide and subsequently precipitating the cellulose with Glauber salts (sodium sulphate). The Glauber slats are leached out of the precipitate with water and then a portion of the remaining viscose cellulose sponge is compressed and dried, the drying being aided, if desired, by heating the sponge during compression.
