Abstract

A gasoline fraction comprising multiple branched C6 and/or C7 paraffins is produced by hydrocracking a hydrocarbon oil boiling in the range 90-570 DEG C., at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen over a catalyst comprising a hydrogenation-dehydrogenation component and an acid-acting refractory support, recovering a fraction comprising C6 and/or C7 paraffins (e.g. by fractional distillation), isomerizing this fraction over a catalyst capable of isomerizing n-paraffins to branched paraffins and recovering the multiple-branched C6 and/or C7 paraffin fraction from the isomerized product. Hydrocracking conditions of 260-540 DEG C., 52.5-175 kg/cm.2 gauge, space velocity of 0.5-5 m.3 of oil/hour/m.3 of catalyst and 890-3560 m.3 of hydrogen/m.3 of oil are specified. Hydrocracking catalysts may consist of at least one metal of Groups Ib, Vb, VIB, VIIb and/or VIII and/or at least one oxide and/or sulphide of one or more of these metals supported on a support which contains silica and alumina, magnesia, zirconia and/or titania. Isomerizing conditions of 90-320 DEG C., 7-140 kg/cm.2, a space velocity of 0.1-10 m.3 of oil/hour/m.3 of catalyst and a hydrogen: oil ratio of 0.1 to 20 are specified. Isomerization catalysts may be of the Friedel-Crafts type or may consist of at least one metal of Groups Ib, VIb and/or VIII and/or at least one oxide and/or sulphide of one or more of these metals supported on an acid-acting carrier which may contain silica and/or alumina and/or magnesia and/or titania. The hydrocracking feed may have been subjected to hydrogenative refining.
