Abstract
1,112,365. Artificial respiration apparatus; blood pumps. SOCIETE BERTIN & CIE. 2 Aug., 1965 [5 Aug., 1964; 9 March, 1965], No. 32945/65. Headings A5R and A5T. [Also in Divisions F1 and G3] Respiratory apparatus or a blood pump comprises a device for alternately filling and emptying a cavity 1, Fig. 2, a driving fluid eg. air or liquid-. being supplied.. through pipe 3 to nozzle 4, Fig. 1. With venting valve 5a closed and venting valve 6a opened the vacuum created in duct 5 causes the emerging jet initially to hug the wall 8a of the diffuser exhaust duct 8. Cavity 1 which may be a patient's lungs, commences to evacuate through load duct 10 and the pressure reduction is communicated through switching duct 11 to duct 6. This causes the emerging jet.to be deflected towards load duct 11 whereby cavity 1 is filled up until the increasing pressure communicated through switching duct 11 to duct 6 allows the jet again to be deflected towards wall 8a and the cycle to recommence Alteration of the setting of a valve 7a in an intercommunicating duct 7 or of venting valves 5a 6a permits adjustment of the rate of pumping and the ratio of maximum to minimum pressure in cavity 1. In another embodiment, a blood pump having a bladder (12), Fig. 3 (not shown) is mounted within cavity (1) and communicates with a pipe (14) having two non-return valves (13b), (13a) whereby the flexing of bladder; (12) causes fluid pumping in the pipe. In a further embodiment the device (2) Fig. 4,(not shown) is submerged in a liquid-filled. tank (15) into which the valves (5a), (6a) open. An electrically driven, submersible pump (16) supplies the driving liquid through a supply line having a valve-type-: by pass (20) and a pressure gauge (18). The tank may alternatively contain pressurized air or may, be maintained below atmospheric pressure by the pump (16),. In an application to a breathing mask valves 6a; 7a Fig. 1 are omitted, and valve 5a is replaced by a filter (25), Fig. 5 (not shown) which places duct (5) in communication with the patient's lungs via a breathing mask (23). In a. further application to a breathing mask a balloon (26) Fig. 8 (not shown) is connected to duct (5), Fig. 7 (not shown), so that it communicates with the patient's lungs to allow manual control of the pumping frequency.
