Abstract
1,111,402. Agitating metal melts. L'AIR LIQUIDE, SOC. ANON. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE. 11 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965; 27 June, 1966], No. 36085/66. Heading B1C. [Also in Division F4] A metallurgical induction furnace crucible 1 has in its lower portion at least one porous refactory plug 4 through which inert gas may be admitted to modify the electro-magnetic agitation currents; agitation by the gas may take place during, before or after the electromagnetic agitation. The gas may be inert or reactive. The crucible may have a cover (40, 42 Fig. 3, not shown) to conserve the atmosphere derived from an inert agitating gas; it may be provided with a gas inlet pipe (46). The winding 2 is energised by alternating current at 500-2,000 cycles/sec and gas is introduced at a rate of 0.2 to 2.1/min/cm<SP>2</SP> of plug surface in contact with the melt.
