Abstract

1,110,881. Continuous mixing appliances. BAKER PERKIN CHEMICAL MACHINERY Ltd. (BAKER PERKINS Inc.) 28 April, 1965, No. 17952/65. Heading B1C. A continuous mixer has shafts 86, 88 rotating in the same direction and carrying members 100, 102 of lenticular cross-section with arcuate crests designed so that the flanks of each member are wiped by the crests of the co-operating member on the other shaft. The members may consist of short helical or straight sections and may be pitched round the shafts (e.g. offset at 45‹) in a manner to advance material through the apparatus; some of the members may be of reverse helical pitch. They may have axial extensions arranged to pass through grooves in the co-operating member, see Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown). The members may be keyed on the shafts to be axially removable and there may be intermeshing feed screws, 110, 112. The housing provides two intercommunicating cylindrical chambers arranged one above the other in which there may be baffles 220, 222 (see Fig. 9 not shown), to cause the material to take a sinuous path. The housing is split along a vertical axial plane into two parts pivoted at 48 to open under control of handwheels 82 (see Fig. 2, not shown). The discharge aperture and consequently residence time are controlled by axially slidable adjustable closure plates 116, 118. There is a jacket 28 for a heat exchange medium.
