Abstract

Pyrogenically obtained silica which contains reactive OH-groups distributed over its surface is rendered hydrophobic by suspending in water and treating directly with liquid or vaporized alkyl halogen silanes and subjecting to a thermal after-treatment at temperatures of from 200 DEG to 500 DEG C., after it has been filtered, washed, dried and ground. The silane may be di-methyl dichlorosilane. A water-immiscible organic liquid, e.g. toluene in from 0.01 to 1% based on the weight of the suspension may be added before filtering. The drying may be at from 105-140 DEG C.
