Abstract

A vinyl chloride - ethylene copolymer is obtained in the presence of a radical catalyst at a substantially constant (\sB 10 DEG C.) temperature between 9.9-60 DEG C. and an ethylene pressure between 5-150 kg./cm.2 which is maintained within 20% of the set pressure by withdrawing ethylene during the reaction. The polymerization is preferably effected in aqueous emulsion or suspension which may contain methanol, hydrocarbons, or mercaptan or halogen chain transfer agents; polyvinylalcohol or sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate may be used as suspension or emulsifying agent. Several catalysts are mentioned, redox systems being preferred. There may be present a third monomer, e.g. propylene, butene-1, isobutene, vinyl ethers, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinylidene chloride, divinylbenzene, diallyl phthalate or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate.
