Abstract

[Also in Divisions E and F1] In an hydraulic turbine unit for borehole drilling, gear pump 56 driven by an extension of the turbine shaft 29, 29a, supplies oil via a cen- . tral tube 57, ram control valve system 58 and a central tube 61 to operate an hydraulic loading ram, Fig. 1 (not shown). The oil returned from the ram passes to an annular reservoir 70a, having an inner flexible wall 71 bounded on its other side by an annular chamber 70b connected to a drilling fluid passage 50a whereby the oil in the reservoir 70a is maintained at approximately the pressure within the passage 50a. From the reservoir 70a, the oil passes via passages 73 to an annular chamber 74 and thence via a passage 75 to lubricate the bearings 21, 22 and via a passage 79 to the control valve system 58. From the control valve system the oil passes through the space between tubes 57 and 80 to a chamber 81 and thence returns to the inlet of pump 56 via a passage 82, a filter chamber 83, a chamber 84 and a passage 85. Replenishment oil can pass from the filter chamber 83 via a passage 86 to the chamber 87 containing the gearing 34 &c. and bearings 23, 31, 32 and 33. The oil system can be topped-up through a nipple 91; preferably, screw plugs are provided for bleeding off trapped air.
