Abstract
Molten metal is treated with an additive by introducing it into the molten metal passing through a circular whirl basin which produces a spin and vortex at its bottom outlen connected to a refractory down tube which opens inside and at or near the bottom of a vessel e.g. ladle receiving the molten metal. The addition may be made directly into the metal stream from the furnace or on to the vortex. The molten metal may be cast iron, and the additive 2% calcium carbide (or other desulphurizers such as soda ash, lime and/or fluoride); 1% crushed Fe-Si; Mg-Fe-Si. Ca-Si or other inoculant; Mo alloy; or P-Cu. The treatment may be modifying Al-Si alloys with sodium compounds.
