Abstract

1,109,358. Yarn and securing means; tubular bobbin. BARBER-COLMAN CO. 9 Nov., 1966 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 50178/66. Heading B8H. A tubular bobbin 10 is provided with means for positively holding the end of a body of thread wound thereon. The securing means comprises an axially flexible, resilient member 17 secured to the nose of the bobbin over the hole of the bobbin, and having opposed relatively movable edges, e.g. a slit 18 to grip the thread but to release the thread when an axial pressure difference is applied outwardly of the bobbin. The member is preferably a resilient diaphragm having a plurality of slits 18 therethrough extending across the hole and angularly spaced around the latter. The slits are preferably radially disposed and intersect near the centre of the member to divide the member into V-shaped segments which flex along chords 21 to open when an axial pressure difference is applied. In use, an unwound thread end 13 is passed to the nose of the bobbin and is either drawn into the tube by suction or is blown into the tube, the diaphragm flexing into the tube. Removal of the pressure differential causes the diaphragm to assume its closed relaxed position. Removal of the thread end from the bobbin tube is effected by suction or by blowing.
