A sewing machine looptaker comprises a body journalled on a non-rotatable stud extending co-axially of the body, an element secured to the body and formed with a flat bearing surface and with at least one loopseizing beak, a bobbin case formed with a flange abutting said flat surface, and non- rotatable means extending within said body for constraining the bobbin case both radially and axially with respect to said body, said restraining means including a platform secured on said stud. A stud 26, upstanding from and rigid with a plate 12, journals a pulley 28 which is driven by a belt 90 and which is rigid with a looptaker body 30 in the form of an inverted hollow cone. Secured in the open end of body 30 is a flat ring 33 formed with a series of loop-seizing beaks 34. A platform 51, secured by a screw 50 to stud 26, is formed with upstanding walls 53, 54, and receives a bobbin case 55 non-rotatably. The bobbin case is formed peripherally with a flange 57 resting on ring 33, and is formed in its undersurface with a cavity 75 which extends beyond platform 51 and terminates in a wall 76 parallel to an edge 66 of the bobbin case engaging wall 54. A pin 60, rising within a central cavity 58 formed in the bobbin case, journals a bobbin 59. The bobbin case exterior is formed with a thread-camming surface 62 connecting flange 57 to a thread-storage ledge 63, and said exterior is connected to cavity 58 by a radial, bobbin thread-passing notch 64. The upper position of the bobbin case projects into an aperture 70 in a plate 41 rigid with plate 12, a shoulder 73 of aperture 70 abutting a side 65 of notch 64. A wire spring 71, secured to plate 41, engages edge 66. A leaf spring 79, pivoted at 78 to plate 41, bears on bobbin 59. Plates 12 and 41 are pivoted on a vertical axis and are spring-biased to engage a surface on plate 41 with a fired abutment for positioning a needle aperture 95 in plate 41 in correct relation to the needle 19. In operation, one of the beaks 34 seizes a thread loop from the ascending needle and expands the loop over the bobbin case. The lower limb N5, extending from the thread supply, passes into cavity 75 and is halted at wall 76. The upper limb NW, extending from the work, is cammed by surface 62 on to ledge 63, where it is positioned away from the beaks 34. Limb NW, when released by the beak 34, is held between edge 66 and spring 71 until the ascending needle acting on limb NS raises the bobbin case to free limb NS from wall 76, when the thread loop is drawn into the work.
