Abstract

Compositions for the manufacture of playball shells, e.g. for tennis balls, comprise a vulcanized natural and/or synthetic rubber containing a reinforcing filler having a density of 0.8-1.25 gms./c.c. which is a thermoplastic synthetic resin of the reinforcing type (i.e. a synthetic resin capable of forming articles in an uncompounded state) particles of which are dispersed preferably in amounts of 20 to 40% by weight of rubber used in a matrix of the vulcanized natural and/or sythetic rubber composition. Synthetic resins specified are polyethylene, polypropylene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene interpolymers and rubbers used include natural rubber and polybutadiene.ALSO:Hollow playball shells for tennis balls comprise a self-supporting hollow sphere of a vulcanised natural and/or synthetic rubber composition containing a reinforcing filler having a density of 0.8 - 1.25 grams/c.c. constituted by a thermoplastic synthetic resin of the self-reinforcing type (i.e. a synthetic resin capable of forming articles in an uncompounded state.) particles of which are dispersed preferably in amounts of 20 to 40% by weight of rubber used in a matrix of the vulcanised natural and/or synthetic rubber composition. Synthetic resins specified include polyethylene polypropylene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene inter-polymers, and rubbers used include natural rubber and polybutadiene. The shells have zero or up to 6 p.s.i. super atmospheric internal pressure. The compositions may also contain as reinforcing resins finely divided cellulosic materials and thermosetting synthetic resins of the phenolic type having a density of 0.8 - 1.25 gm./c.c. and a particle size of not greater than 50 mesh B.S.S. The high resilience and resistance of the shell to deformation is derived from the composition used and the internal pressure may be obtained from nitrogen generating ingredients present in the composition which form nitrogen gas during manufacture.
