Abstract
Thermoplastic polyamides are prepared by reacting (a) polymerized fatty acid mixture containing 95-100% of dimerized acid with (b) ethylene diamine; and (c) 2.5-10% of e -caprolactam at 180-250 DEG C. The polymerized fatty acid mixture may be obtained by free radical or ionic polymerization of a saturated or mono- or poly-ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated fatty acid, e.g. tall oil fatty acid, in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. alumina. The mixture of oligomers so formed may be distilled to isolate the dimer. The acid may be replaced by an amide-forming derivative, e.g. its methyl or ethyl acid ester. The reaction mixture may contain hexamethylene diamine in an amount such that its equivalence ratio to ethylene diamine is 1:1-9. After the polymerization the eliminated water may be removed at 15-20 mm. Hg. The product may be up to 30% soluble in propanol, isopropanol, butanol, ethanol and mixtures of isopropanol with benzines and toluene, the products being useful as adhesives for metal, wood, leather and synthetic materials. In examples a phenoplast resin is added to the polymerization mixture as an antioxidant.
