Abstract

1,107,481. Rollers. GIBBONS BROS. Ltd. 28 Dec., 1965 [28 Oct., 1964], No. 43906/64. Heading F2U. [Also in Division F4] In a continuous ceramic firing kiln, the need for forcibly cooling the extremeties of hollow ceramic rollers 17 is removed by containing the ends of said rollers within the relatively cool region of ducts 18, extending through the thick refractory walls 13 and insulation 14, and having attached to the ends of said rollers by means of sleeves 27, metallic shafts 25, direct contact between shaft and roller being prevented by providing a layer 28 of refractory cement between the roller and sleeve and welding the other end of the sleeve to the ends of four vanes 26 projecting from the shaft. The rollers are operated by a chain drive mechanism acting on sprockets 34, said rollers being held between removable bearings 32, with plug 31 acting as a seal. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the shaft has screwed on to its end a metallic end cap (122) within which the roller is held by means of refractory cement.
