1,107,264. Artificial legs. C. E. L. ALLEN. 1 Oct., 1964 [2 Oct., 19631, No. 38794/63. Heading A5R. An artificial leg comprising thigh, knee joint. shin, and heel and fore-foot portions, and provided with hydraulic means controlling knee flexure, and means responsive to the application of weight to either of the foot portions to close a hydraulic by-pass circuit so as to restrict the flexure, is characterised in that the forefoot portion is urged by springs to a non-flexed position so as to give thrust-off when walking and is attached to a push rod and lever system which actuates a valve controlling the hydraulic by-pass. As described, a piston connected to the thigh portion 1 moves in a cylinder 13 in the shin portion subject to the free flow of hydraulic fluid in the cylinder through a bypass around the piston, the by-pass including a shuttle valve controlled by a rod 38 from the foot. The foot comprises a heel part having a pressure button 37, and pivoted to this a forepart 28 connected to the rod 38 by a linkage 32. 33. Pressure on the button 37 or pivoting of the forepart 38 moves the rod 38 upwards and, through an eccentric cam and the shuttle valve, prevents movement of the piston and flexure of the knee joint. Flexing of the knee joint within 11 degrees is permitted, before full locking of the knee joint takes place, by connecting the piston rod 8 to the abovementioned piston through a second piston, a certain relative movement between the two being possible under the action of a spring and bleeding of the hydraulic fluid.
