Abstract

110,661. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Mechanical Rubber Co.). Jan. 4, 1917. Devulcanizing and utilizing waste rubber. - Rubber waste containing fibrous matter is recovered and utilized in such a way as to retain the rubber and its admixture as well as the reaction products in the final product by treatment with sulphuric or other acid to destroy the fibre; the acid is then neutralized, for example by means of lime added slightly in excess; after drying until about 8-10 per cent. of moisture remains, the excess of base is converted into a substance not deleterious to rubber by heating with a saponifiable oil, such as corn oil, or with other substances, such as a glycerine, wax, or fatty substance and with a devulcanizing agent, such as a heavy mineral oil or grease, with or without resins or bituminous substances. If desired, the liquor remaining after the acid treatment may be separately treated with lime, the sludge formed being subsequently mixed with the rubber. In either case, the mixture of rubber, reaction products &c. is dried and treated in the usual manner of treating devulcanized rubber.
