Abstract

1,106,604. Dashpots; hydraulic couplings. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 15 Nov., 1965, No. 48314/65. Headings F2C and F2S. In a rotary dashpot, including a rotor 34 with its shaft 31 mounted in bearings 39 in a housing 30 and with its distance from a stator 35 adjustable by a screw cap 37, the working space 40 within the housing 30 is filled with a working fluid that is thickened by shearing, the thickened fluid reverting towards its original fluidity after the shearing has stopped. The same kind of working fluid is contained in the working space (4), Fig. 1 (not shown), of a rotary coupling comprising a housing (1) which is the driven member and which is rotatably mounted upon the shaft (7) of a rotor (6) which is situated in the working space (4) the shaft being the driving member. The housing (1) may be the driving member and the shaft (7) the driven member. In another rotary coupling arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), a working fluid as specified is incorporated in the working space (4) of a housing (1) with an inner conical face (21) adjacent a corresponding face (22) on a rotor (6) the shaft (7) of which is movable axially by a mechanism (23) to adjust the gap between the faces (21, 22). Either the shaft (7) or the housing (1) may be the driving member. The working fluid may be a solution of a polycopolymer, or homopolymer or, a solution of one of the latter in a lubricating, synthetic, or mineral oil. Preferably a copolymer is employed which is obtained from compounds having a polymerizable ethylenic linkage e.g. a copolymer of 1-vinyl-2-pyrollidone and lauryl methacrylate. In its fully thickened form the fluid is stated to act as a self-damping elastomeric coupling.
