In an apparatus for determining the quantity of suspension in a liquid, such as dredging spoil, passing through a pipe 1 and a hollow conical portion 15, mounted for restricted movement, the axial and vertical forces exerted on the portion 15 are measured in order to determine the quantity of suspension in the liquid. The portion 15 is axially adjustable and gaps between each end of the portion 15 and the adjacent ends of pipe 1 are cleaned by water supplied to a casing 4 through connection 34.
