Abstract
1,105,745. Radar. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 12 July, 1965 [11 Aug., 1964], No. 32729/64. Heading H4D. In a radar which is mounted on a vehicle and which is of the kind having a true motion P.P.I. display, means are provided for automatically returning the origin of the said display to a predetermined point upon the surface thereof at regular predetermined time intervals, independently of the motion of the vehicle. As described, a ship's log drives an electrical source 4, Fig. 2, the output from which is connected through an analogue converter 5 to a resolver 6, whose rotor is controlled by a motor 7 coupled to the ship's compass. The resolver provides two outputs, respectively representative of mutually perpendicular " N-S " and " E-W " components of " own ship " movement, and these are fed to integrators 8, 9. The outputs of the integrators are amplified by units 10, 11 and are fed to the mutually perpendicular deflection coils 2, 3 of a cathode-ray tube (C.R.T.) 1, with a long afterglow screen, forming part of a normal radar equipment. There are also provided re-set relays 14, 15, associated with the integrators 8, 9, and arranged, when actuated, to re-set them to potentials appropriate to the predetermined point (for example, the centre of the display) to which the origin is to be returned. The potentials are supplied from a source 13 and may be independently adjusted manually. The periodicity of operation of the relays 14, 15 is controlled by a timer 12. The display (Fig. 1, not shown) features several traces for each target, the latest being the brightest, whose lengths and directions indicate the speeds and courses of the said targets. Instead of using a C.R.T. with a long afterglow screen, a storage type of C.R.T. may be provided or signal storage means may be inserted in the channels leading to the display tube. Existing true motion radars can be converted by adding time-controlled equipment as described, which may be arranged for switching in at will.
