Abstract
1,105,235. Automatic control of tension. DAVID & DAVID Inc. July 15, 1966 [Aug. 12, 1965], No. 31962/66. Heading G3R. [Also in Division D1 In a system for controlling the size of a loop in continuously fed material, e. g. textured yarn, by adjustment of the speed of feed or take up drives, changes in the vertical size of the loop are translated into a lateral movement which is detected to effect control. The yarn, comprising four strands, leaves a constant speed winding assembly 12, passes through a heating chamber 16 and along a mandrel 14b and is then looped round inclined guide rods 102, 104. The height of the loop determines the lateral position of the yarn where it passes over the top rod 42 of a ladder type tensioning device, and this lateral position is detected by pivoted feeler rods 94 attached to a shutter Fig. 4 (not shown) between an electric lamp and a photo-cell controlling, via a thyristor circuit, the speed of an electric motor driving four cone winders 26 (one for each strand). The shutter has a tapered arcuate slot whose shape is designed to provide an overall linear relationship between speed and loop displacement. To maintain the loop in a central position despite the speed change necessitated by build up in the diameter of the wound core, the lamp intensity may be varied by a rheostat operated by a core size detecting roller Fig. 6 (not shown).
