In a synthetic plastics flushing cistern wherein a syphonic discharge is initiated by operating a lever handle the spindle or rock shaft 3 of which rotates in a bearing in the front wall 1 and has affixed thereto a radial arm 13, which may be synthetic plastics material, operating the syphon, the wall 10 having a bearing hole 5 for the shaft 3, the rear wall 2 having a bearing slot 9 running to the upper edge of the wall 2, its lower end being aligned with the hole 11 and the shaft 12 being such that it can be passed through the hole 5 to engage with the slot 9 for support to rotate at both ends, the shaft 3 has a fixing portion 10 received in a U-shaped end 14 of the arm 13 having limbs 15 drawn together by a bolt passing therethrough and received in a slot 12 in the portion 10.
