Abstract

A coating composition comprises coal tar pitch and a urethane polymer, free from isocyanate groups, formed by reacting a diisocyanate with an excess of a polyhydroxy compound. The polymer constitutes 30-70% by weight of the composition. The polyhydroxy compound may be a linear or preferably a branched polyether or polyester or a condensate of formaldehyde with urea, melamine, or benzoguanamine reacted in the presence of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol. To ensure that all the isocyanate groups are reacted, the ratio of hydroxy groups to isocyanate groups in the reaction mixture is not less than 1.5:1. The pitch and polyurethane may be mixed or the polyurethane prepared in the presence of the pitch. In examples various compositions are applied in conventional solvents to glass substrates and dried. Pigments, fillers and extenders may be present.
