Abstract

An electrode of an electrolytic cell for the production of hypochlorite from sea water has a surface layer or a boundary layer under a platinum film which layer is an alloy of nickel and platinum containing not less than 30% platinum. The substrate may be nickel or titanium, and when nickel, the alloy may be formed by heat-treatment of the platinum layer. A bi-polar electrode is formed by applying a platinum film to one surface of a nickel substrate to form an outer platinum film and an intermediate platinum nickel alloy layer. No plating details given.
