Abstract

A liquid, curable composition consists essentially of (a) 10 equivalent of RHSiO, present as a polysiloxane having a unit ratio of 10 RHSiO units/100 to 1000 R2SiO units, where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, there being an average of more than 2 RHSiO units per molecule, (b) from 9 to 11 equivalents of a liquid alpha, omega diolefin, and (c) a catalytic amount of platinum, the equivalents of terminal olefin groups present being within 10% of the equivalents of the RHSiO units. Chloroplatinic acid is the preferred catalyst. The diolefins, e.g. hexadiene-1,5, octadiene-1,7, 2-ethylhexadiene-1,5, decadiene-1,9, octadecadiene-1,17 and divinylbenzene, serve as cross-linking agents. The products are resins, rubbers or gels. Plasticizers, colouring, internal olefins, fillers and other silicones may also be added. In a typical Example (1) a liquid (CH3)3SiO-terminated siloxane composed of CH3.H.SiO and (CH3)2SiO units was reacted at room temp. with hexadiene-1,5, in the presence of chloroplatinic acid to yield a rubber. Uses: for potting electronic components.
