Abstract

Lactones and carboxylic acids are produced by the liquid phase reaction of (1) a cyclic ketone of formula (CH2)nC=O, wherein n is 3-7 or an alkyl derivative thereof, (2) an aldehyde of formula RCHO wherein R is H, C1- 10 alkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl of up to 10 carbon atoms and (3) oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas at 0-100 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) 0.1-100 p.p.m. (of metal) based on the total weight of reactants of an organic or inorganic Co, Mn, Cu, Ni or Fe salt having catalytic oxidizing activity in the liquid phase and which is soluble in the reaction mixture and (B) 0.001 to 10% by weight based on the total weight of reactants of a sulphate of Co, Mn, Ni, Al, Mg, Cu (cuprous) or Fe (ferrous). The examples describe the preparation of e -caprolactone with acetic or propionic acid and g -valerolactone with acetic acid.
