Abstract

1,103,547. Screw presses. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. 22, March, 1965 [25, March, 1964], No. 12533/64. Heading B1C. [Also in Division B5] An extrusion moulding machine comprises a sectionalised barrel 4, 5, 6, whose sections are separated by compression plates 7, 8, and a screw 3 having sections 11, 12, 13 separated by threadless portions 14, 15 which substantially coincide in axial position with the plates 7, 8. The flow path 17 for the moulding material is decreased in cross-sectional area in the downstream direction by the provision of curved surfaces 9 on plates 7, 8 and linings 23. Preferably the decrease in cross-sectional area is by one half in passing from one section to the next and preferably the screw sections 11, 12, 13 have one, two and three start threads respectively. Passages 19 for coolant are provided. The moulding material may be polyvinyl chloride or a compound thereof and it is stated that the plasticized material is cut into pellets on emergence from the extrusion die.
