Abstract

In the production of paper in fourdrinier machines provided with a fourdrinier wire of copper or copper alloy, corrosion of the fourdrinier wire carrying a web of paper containing an optical brightening agent of the formula <FORM:1103399/D1-D2/1> in which X is a chloride atom or the amino, methylamino, anilino, N-methylanilino, meta-or parasulphanilino, phenoxy or methoxy radical and Y is the amino, methylamino, dimethylamino, benzylamino, monoethanolamino, monoisopropanolamino, b -methoxyethylamino, N-methylethanolamino, diethanolamino, diisopropanolamino, N-b -cyanoethylethanolamino, morpholino, anilino, N-methyl anilino, phenoxy or methoxy radical, is prevented by the presence of a compound having the formula <FORM:1103399/D1-D2/2> in which R1 is H, alkyl, -(CH2)m -COOH, (CH2)m -CONH2, -(CH2)2-3 OH <FORM:1103399/D1-D2/3> or <FORM:1103399/D1-D2/4> R2 is H, a halogen atom, alkyl, aryl or the radical <FORM:1103399/D1-D2/5> in 2,3-, 3,4- or 4,5- position, X is 0 or NH, m is 1 or 2 and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 as an anti-corrosive agent. The anticorrosive agent may be added to the paper pulp containing the brightening agent from which the web of paper is formed or added to the sprinkling water for the fourdrinier wire carrying the web of paper containing the brightening agent. The anticorrosive agents may be used in the form of aqueous solutions which may contain alkalis, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide, ammonia, to the sprinkling water 50-500 ppm may be organic solvent, e.g. ethanol, isopropanol, glycols and glycol ethers. 0.1-0.3% of the optical brightener based on the weight of the dry paper pulp may be used. When added to the pulp 50-200 g of anticorrosive agent per ton of fabricated paper may be used and when added to the sprinkling water 50-500 ppm may be used. The pulp and sprinkling water may also contain inorganic or organic coloured or uncoloured pigments, fillers, e.g. China clay, talcum, sizing agents, e.g. alkali metal salts of rosin acids together with aluminium salts or retention aids, e.g. products derived from polyethylene imines.
