Abstract

1,103,080. Shock-absorbing packaging. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 30 Jan., 1967, No. 4487/67. Heading B8C. A portion of an article is packaged in a heatshrunk foamed polymer material to which is secured a transparent film that covers a further portion of the article. In the embodiment, glasses 10 are delivered between stretched foamed polystyrene sheet 14, and transparent polystyrene film 15 which are welded together at intervals by a device 17 to form a discrete pocket for each glass. Having passed through an oven 20 to heat shrink the sheeting, the packages are then separated into single or multiple units. Alternatively, the welding device may also comprise a cutter, e.g. hot wire. The transparent film may also be heat shrinkable. Before packing the sheeting and the film may be vacuum formed to the article shape.
