Abstract
1,102,492. Strut type suspensions. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A.G. 25 Feb., 1965 [27 Feb., 1964], No. 8148/65. Heading B7D. A vehicle independent suspension assembly comprises a telescopic strut articulated at its upper end to a motor vehicle superstructure 3 and supporting at its lower end a wheel, the load acting through the wheel producing a first bending moment on the strut, and a spring 2 operatively associated between the telescopic members 7a, 8 of the strut to apply to the strut a second bending moment acting in opposition to the first bending moment. This reduces friction between the strut members. The spring may be a coil or pneumatic spring with its axis parallel to but displaced from the strut axis 7. Alternatively (Figs. 2, 3 , not shown) the upper or lower end of a parallel-ended coil spring may be displaced sideways to produce a side force on the upper end of the tube 7a of the strut, which force causes a bending moment opposing the first bending moment caused by the eccentricity of the wheel load relative to the strut axis 7. The lower end of the strut is located relative to the superstructure by a transverse arm 5.
