Abstract
Cis-1,4-polyisoprene is made by polymerizing isoprene in an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a catalyst comprising TiCl4 and an aluminium alkyl to which has been added from 0.001 to 1 mol. based on 1 mol. of TiCl4 used, of an iodo-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon carrying at least two halogen atoms on adjacent carbon atoms, of which at least one of the halogen atoms is iodine. The solvent may contain small amounts of an open chain ether, a cyclic ether, a polyether, or an aromatic or mixed aromatic-aliphatic ether. The isoprene monomer may be dissolved in the solvent and, subsequently, in the following order the alkyl aluminium compound, the iodo-hydrocarbon, and TiCl4, added. Exemplified iodo-hydrocarbons are CI2 = CI2, CH2I-CH2I, CHI = CHI, CH2I-CH2Cl, CH2I-CH2Br, CHI = CHCl, CHI = CHBr, CHICl-CHCl2 and CIClH-CCl3.
