Abstract

<PICT:1101321/C4-C5/1> In the production of isoprene by reacting isobutene with formaldehyde (3) in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent, separating (4) into an organic phase (5) and an aqueous phase (6), distiling the organic phase in a first distillation zone (8) to recover solvent (10) and 4,4-dimethylmetadioxane (9), decomposing the latter catalytically (14) and separating (16) the effluent into an organic phase (17) and an aqueous phase (18), distilling the organic phase in a second distillation zone (21) to separate isoprene (22) from unreacted dimethyldioxane (23), contacting each of the aqueous phases (6 and 18) with hydrocarbon solvent (10) separated in the first distillation to extract and recover dimethyldioxane and recycling the extract to the first distillation. The extractions may be effected separately as shown or in the same tower.
