Abstract
<PICT:1100475/C6-C7/1> Molten metal, such as iron, steel, copper, brass or nickel, flows from a ladle 10 to a first chamber 13 to which deoxidizer is added from a bin 18 and passes through a line 33 from below the surface to a second hotter chamber 36 from which it passes to a casting mould. An innocuous atmosphere of inert gas, an oxide of carbon or a mixture of steam and partly burnt natural gas from a source 80, is maintained in the chambers and may enter the chamber 13 below the metal surface. Aluminium, calcium, magnesium or rare earth metals may be added to steel through a purged inlet 21 as may zirconium or titanium to denitrify and chromium, vanadium, titanium, nickel or aluminium as alloying elements. Deoxidizers or alloying elements may be added through a purged inlet 51 to the second chamber 36. A residual amount of molten metal may be retained in the first chamber 13 in which deoxidizer may be dissolved for a subsequent charge of metal.
