Abstract

Sheets or films formed from plastic material and composite materials obtained from them are dyed or printed with aqueous preparations containing a dye or dyes and a water-soluble salt of a high molecular weight fatty acid. The materials may be sheets of polyurethane, polyester, polyvinyl or vinylidene chloride which may contain fillers or be reinforced by fibres, e.g. cotton, rayon, acetate, triacetate, polyester, natural or synthetic polyamide or acrylic polymers and may especially be imitation leathers containing polyurethane foam and polyester fibres. The dies may be azo, metal complex or reactive dyes preferably having a water-solubility of at least 2 g/l. The higher fatty acids may have 12-18 C atoms and may be "blown", those specified being ricinoleic, oleic, and blown ricinoleic acid. The dye preparations may also contain a water-miscible organic solvent of b.p. 50-200 DEG C, e.g. glycols (others are specified), additional organic solvents, e.g. liquid saturated hydrocarbons, and anionic or non-ionic surfactants, foam inhibitors, synthetic resin dispersions and organic and inorganic pigments. The preparations may be applied by brushing (with a plush pad), roller coating, spraying, flow coating on a curtain coating machine, printing and padding, preferably by means of pressure rollers situated below the surface of the dye liquor. Examples of dyeing imitation leathers are given.
