Abstract

1,100,077. Measuring yarn tension. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. July 29, 1966 [July 30, 1965], No.34224/66. Heading G1N. The tension in a moving yarn is measured by passing it over a spring-loaded movable guide carrying a Hall-plate element initially in a neutral position relative to a magnetic field, but displaced by the tension to give an output signal indicative of the tension. The yarn 44 (Fig. 2) travels vertically between two fixed guides 12, 14 on either side of a movable guide 16 which is displaced by the tension. Guide 16 is a ceramic pin which extends through a block 20 and is fixed to a rod 38, being supported in the block by two flexural pivots 30. The free end of rod 38 carries a Hall-plate element 48 (Fig. 4) initially located centrally with respect to the poles of two C-shaped magnets 68, 70. Tension in the yarn causes the assembly to move the element 48 to the right as shown where the magnetic field produces a D.C. output signal from the element, indicative of the displacement and the yarn tension.
