Abstract
1,099,734. Constant force gas springs and hydropneumatic shock-absorbers. C. ARNOLD. March 4, 1965 [March 4, 1964; Nov. 2, 1964], No. 9276/65. Heading F2S. A constant force spring for counterbalancing, e.g. a suspended weight which is to be moved vertically comprises a cylinder 1 which receives, in a fluid-tight manner, a dip-rod 4 and which is filled partly with a liquid such as propane, isobutane, and partly with the vapour of this liquid, the vapour which is saturated always acting, with constant pressure, upon the lower end face of the diprod 4. The seal between the upper end of the cylinder 1 and the dip-rod 4 comprises a perforated sleeve 7 which, clamping packing rings 8 and 9, 10, is screwed at its ends into a cylinder end wall 3 and a guide ring 6, a flexible tube 11, drawn over the guide ring 6 and over an extension of the end wall 3, being filled with sealing liquid, and subjected exteriorly to the vapour pressure within the cylinder 1. A stop-ring 15 at the lower end of the dip-rod prevents a complete ejection of the rod. The gas is introduced into the cylinder 1 through the hollow dip-rod 4, closable at its upper end by a screw plug 18, and through a one-way valve at the base of the rod 4, a screw vent 17 being provided at the base of the cylinder 1. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, sealing liquid is accommodated in the annular space (32) between an end wall (23) of the cylinder (21) and a floating sealing piston (29) through which the dip-rod (26) extends, an inlet valve (34) being provided for the introduction of gas. In a further modification, Fig. 3, not shown, the constant pressure of the gas in the cylinder space (55) acts upon the expansible bellows (48) of an hydraulic ram comprising a dip-rod (50) which works in an oil-filled tube (46) welded in an end-plate (43) of the cylinder (41) and has openings (52) adjacent its open lower end. The cylinder (41) is clamped by bolts (44) between the end-plate (43) and a lower end-plate (42). Suitable heating and/or cooling apparatus may be provided for keeping the temperature constant, the apparatus being controlled by the pressure prevailing in the cylinder or, by a thermostat.
