An electrolytic capacitor (Fig. 1) comprises a pair of foils 11, 12 of valve metal, e.g. aluminium interposed with porous, e.g. paper spacers 13 convolutely wound with the respective electrodes protruding from opposite ends of the roll. The projecting convoluted edges are compressed into electrical contact and covered by conductive layers 14, 16 of e.g. sprayed aluminium, to which are attached metallic terminal studs 15, 17 encased in plastic plugs 21, 22. The capacitor is impregnated with a glycol borate or glycol formate electrolyte to saturate the spacers, after which the dielectric oxide film is formed on the anode foil by applying a direct voltage between anode and cathode. The capacitor is enclosed in a tubular metal casing (Fig. 3, not shown) which is crimped round the underside of each plug 21, 22 and swaged over resilient rings placed over the plugs. The foils may be preformed before winding, and the protruding foil turns may be welded, brazed, or soldered, or attached by conductive resin to the terminal studs either directly or over connector strips. Other valve metals may be used, the cathode may be connected to the metal casing, or terminal leads may be brought out at one end. The capacitor may be constructed as a feedthrough capacitor.
