Abstract
7a b - Methyl - 3,6 - dioxo - A - nor - B - homo-steroids (novel when they are of the androstane or pregnane series) are prepared by reacting 7a - unsubstituted - 3,6 - dioxo - D 7 - A - nor - B-homo-steroids with a methyl magnesium halide with subsequent hydrolysis. Compounds of the androstane, pregnane, cholane, cholestane, spirostane and cardanolide series and their 19-nor counterparts are mentioned. In the products free hydroxy and keto groups may be released from ester, ether and ketal groups; keto groups may be reduced to hydroxyl with or without introduction of hydrocarbon groups; and hydroxy groups may be esterified or etherified. The compounds of the invention, which have various steroidal properties, may be made up into pharmaceutical or veterinary compositions or added to animal feedstuffs.
