Abstract
1,097,481. Aerofoils. L. P. MOORE. Jan. 4, 1965 [Jan. 4, 1964], No. 473/64. Heading B7W. An aerofoil comprises a rigid outer skin 12, e.g. of metal or plywood reinforced by spanwise extending flanges 15, 16 bonded at their edges to the skin, and webs 17, 18 bonded to the flanges to define a box spar 2. The spar is filled with metal honeycomb, and the rest of the aerofoil by preformed cores such as 5, 6, of expanded synthetic plastics, such as polyurethane. These may be bored, as at 22, 24, for air vents or for the passage of control cables, and are bonded to the surrounding skin flanges and webs. The aerofoil shown has an aileron or flap 9 connected to the rest of the aerofoil by spars 7, 8 and hinges 29. Ribs 20, apertured to accommodate the spar 2, are provided, and the spar 2 may taper towards the tip.
