Abstract
1, 097, 231. Purifying exhaust gases. J.R. CONWAY. Feb. 22, 1965 [March 21, 1964], No.12043/64. Heading F1B. An exhaust gas treatment device comprises a combustion chamber having exhaust gas and air inlets and igniting means and an extractor 15, Fig. 3 arranged to cause a flow of air to assist gas discharge during vehicle motion. Exhaust gases from pipe 6 and air from pipe 7 are mixed together in compartment B where the unburnt gases are ignited by a spark plug (8), Fig. 1 (not shown). The hot gases passing through compartment C are cooled by external air which enters the hollow jacket 3 through forward-facing louvres 13 and thereafter enter exit tubes 12 through the perforations in baffle 10. In a modification the spark plug is replaced by a flame from a pressurized gas container.
