Abstract
In a process for the purification of diaryl carbonates a diaryl carbonate is treated with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal phenolate or with a neutral or acidic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an inorganic or organic acid having a dissociation constant less than 10-2 or with salt of a partially esterified polybasic acid, at a temperature above about 160 DEG C. and subsequently distilled. The products are converted to polycarbonates by the transesterification process. Treating agents specified include mono- and disodium phenyl phosphates, primary and secondary potassium phosphates, sodium carbonate, barium carbonate and the disodium salt of bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-dimethyl methane. In examples diphenyl carbonate and bis-(4-carbophenoxyphenyl)-dimethyl-methane are purified.
