Abstract

1,096,612. Shock-absorbers. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 12, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No. 11078/64. Heading F2S. A bumper, e.g. for arresting a steel slab 14 discharged from a reheating furnace across a roller table 12, comprises a rigid, elongated impactreceiving plate 16, the lower edge of which is scalloped to fit over the table rollers 13 and which is supported by a number of wires, ropes, chains, or the like 20 each of which is pivotally connected at its upper end (at 24), to a support structure, and has its lower end pivotally connected, at 28, to a pulley block 30. A rope 34, pivotally connected at one end to a foundation 36, passes over a pulley wheel 35 and is connected at its other end to a suspended mass such as 37. Each rope 20 passes through a pair of guide pulleys 31, 32. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lower ends of the wires (38) are connected, by mechanical linkages (43, 47, 51), to weights (57) which are slidable along inclined planes (60). Air springs can be arranged to push on the back of the plate 16.
