Abstract
Flexible and extensible chlorinated linear polyethylene of molecular weight below 500,000, substantially all of which is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbon solvents and which is substantially free of crystallinity and contains 20-60% by weight of chlorine, is prepared by chlorinating particles of polyethylene, melting between 125 DEG and 145 DEG C. and having an intrinsic viscosity in decalin at 135 DEG C. from 0.7 to 3.5 dl./g., in an aqueous slurry containing not more than 20% by weight of said particles, with chlorine fed at a rate not above 5 parts by weight of chlorine per hour per part by weight of polyethylene starting material, first at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. but not above 120 DEG C., and then, to introduce the last 1 to 15% of combined chlorine based on the weight of the final chlorinated polyethylene, at a temperature at least as high as the upper limit of the melting range of the polyethylene starting material but not above 145 DEG C. In a modification, only part of the last 1 to 15% of chlorine is introduced at the upper limit melting range temperature or above, the remainder being introduced at a lower temperature; furthermore this can be effected alternately, above and below said limit.
