Abstract

1,095,980. Making mattresses. MULTILASTIC Ltd. Nov. 18, 1966 [Nov. 19, 1965], No. 49132/65. Heading A4M. A spring mattress is formed from a plurality of parallel bands 20 of helical springs, each band being formed from a single length of resilient wire and the bands being interconnected by transverse helical tie wires (21, 22). The bands 20 are fed through the mouths 47 of guide channels (44, Figs 5, 7) which extend to a linking station at which the helical, tie wires (21, 22) are fitted. Means are provided to advance the bands step-wise by an amount equal to the spacing of alternate coils in the band. The advancing means may include fingers (58, Fig. 7) depending from transverse arms 57 of a wheeled carriage 56 which is reciprocated longitudinally above the guide channels (44). The carriage drive comprises parallel links 49, 50 pivoted to a stand 42, interconnected by adjustable links 51, and driven by a pneumatic unit 52 acting through pivoted arms 53, 55. Claws (60, Figs 5, 6), carried by bars (59) extending between the forward links 49, engage the bands 20 simultaneously with the fingers (58) to advance the bands. Adjacent parts (25, Fig. 3) of the adjacent coils in each band 20 are engaged between lower and upper pairs of jaws 63, 64 at the linking station. Closure of the jaws 63, 64 produces alignment of the parts (25) to be joined transversely of the bands. At the linking station the helical wires are fed by rollers (72, 73, Fig. 6) in the manner of a screw through helical grooves (71) in the jaws to engage aligned parts (25) of the rows of bands 20. Means is provided for severing the helical wire after uniting the bands and for flattening the severed end of the wire into a closed loop. An alternative means for advancing the bands to the linking station comprises a pair of endless chains (91, 92, Fig. 11) which are driven at different speeds. The chains (91, 92) have teeth (94, 95) for respectively engaging alternate coils of the band (93). The teeth (94, 95) are respectively spaced slightly greater and slightly less than the spacing of alternate coils, the teeth (94) being associated with the faster moving chain (91).
