Abstract

A metering and flow indicating device for use during milking operations comprises a cylindrical chamber 1 which may be connected to a milk supply 3a, an outlet 9 leading from the chamber, milk distributing means within the chamber and capable of passing milk from the supply in an evenly distributed flow on to the interior wall 5 of the chamber, and a metering cup 12 set about the entrance to a discharge tube 10, the area of the metering cup being of a selected ratio relative to the cross-sectional area of the interior of the cylindrical chamber, so as to pass a selected proportion of milk through the metering cup to a graduated scale 11a to indicate the weight of the milk taken from the cow. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the milk distributing means comprises a conical like protuberance 4 formed on the concave undersurface 5 of the closure 2 and positioned directly over the top of the inlet pipe 3. The deflection of the milk is also assisted by a circular collar 6 on the inlet pipe 3 which provides an annular space 6a. The discharge pipe 10 extends upwardly through the chamber 1 to a short distance below the top 1a of the chamber. The metering cup 12 is positioned within the annular space 6a and fitted on the upper open end of the discharge tube 10. The lower end of the discharge tube 10 is connected by a length of transparent piping 10a to a graduated measuring glass 11. The measuring glass and the outlet pipe 9 are connected via a spigot type valve to a return line 17 connected to the milking system. In another embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) the upper end of the inlet pipe is tapered inwardly with an internal screwthread to apply swirling action to the milk. In a further modification Fig. 7 (not shown) the outlet tube extends into the chamber and has a slotted section. The spigot type valve 15 may be replaced by a spring-loaded diaphragm valve.
