Abstract

In a vehicle which is steered by differential control of two hydraulic pumps feeding respective hydraulic motors of drive means on opposite sides of the vehicle, a manually operable universally angularly movable control column 1 is connected to the two pumps by linkage through which angular displacement of the control column from a neutral position in a direction 'FR', longitudinally of the vehicle simultaneously changes the outputs of the pumps equally in the same sense and by which angular displacement of the column sideways or transversely of the vehicle changes the outputs of the two pumps in opposite senses. In Fig. 1, pivoting of the column 1 in the plane F-R about a pivot pin 2 slides a slider 9 along a slideway 9A and through links 15, 16 operates valves A, B together to control the forward and reverse motion of the vehicle. Pivoting of the column in a transverse plane rotates a shaft 5 about its axis and, through an arm 6 on the shaft 5 pivots the slideway 9A about a pin 13 to give different valve movements and hence differential speeds of the motors for steering. In an alternative (Fig. 5) movement of a column 101 about a ball joint 102 in planes perpendicular to the plane of the Figure pivots a bar 115, which is connected by flexible cables (108), (109), (Fig. 6, not shown), to the individual hydraulic circuits for the two motors, about a pin 105 to control the speed of the vehicle while movement of the column 101 in transverse planes, against the resistance of hydraulic devices 123, 124, moves the pin 105 along a shaft 116 to give differential movements of the cables (108), (109) to steer the vehicle on pivoting of the bar 115. A by-pass valve 118 for the hydraulic transmission circuits is operative in the neutral position of the column 101 when a spring-loaded sleeve 120 is pressed into a conical recess in the housing 119 of the ball joint 102. The column 101 must be lifted to cut out the by-pass valve before being moved from the neutral position.
