Abstract

109,458. Wheelwright, H. M., and Traquair, J. July 13, 1916. Sizing; apparatus for treating with liquids.-Paper is sized during manufacture, before the web is dried, by applying a size composed of soluble starch, or its compounds, or converted hydrolyzed starch, preferably feculose, in the form of a film upon both surfaces of the web in the last of the series of wet presses. The size may be applied to the press rolls by means of additional rollers rotating in troughs, or, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the size may be delivered to the soft upper press roll 11, preferably of rubber, from a trough 18 having a pair of movable deckles 19, a flexible apron 21, and air pipes 22, air from the latter forcing inwardly the edges of the film of size and keeping the size properly confined. A hard metallic or wooden roll 16 spread the size on the web, and the web is lifted from the roll 11 by the roll 17 and again pressed thereon at the nip of the rolls 10, 11. A roll 24 and blade 25 are provided for cleaning the roll 11, and a blade 15 ensures an uniform film on the roll 10.
