Abstract
A film of a chlorosulphonated polyethylene composition is vulcanized by applying to the surface of the film a solution containing as the principal vulcanizing ingredient an aliphatic polyamine or polyamide having at least one free amino group in the chain. The polyamine preferably has the formula H2N-(CH2CH2NH)nH where n is preferably 1 to 4, and the polyamide preferably has the formula NH2(R1-NH-R11-NHCORCONH)nH where n is any integer and R, R1 and R11 are alkylene groups. Preferably the polyamine or polyamide is applied in solution in a solvent which is also a solvent for the chlorosulphonated polyethylene. In the examples: (I) and (II) a composition comprising chlorosulphonated polyethylene, magnesia, an ultra-violet light inhibitor and mineral oil in a solvent is spread, three coats, on a nylon fabric. The coated fabric is dusted with a finely divided starch derived from cereals, treated with a solution of a polyamide in toluene and then heated to 212 DEG F. Examples (III) to (V) are similar except that ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine and tetraethylenepentamine solutions are employed instead of the polyamide solution.ALSO:A film of a chlorosulphonated polyethylene composition is applied to a textile material and the thin film is then vulcanized by treatment with a solution containing as the principal vulcanizing ingredient an aliphatic polyamine or polyamide having at least one free amine group in the chain. The preferred polyamine has the formula: H2N-(CH2CH2NH)nH where "n" is preferably 1 to 4, and the preferred polyamide has the formula: NH2(R1-NH-R\yF-NHCORCONH)nH where "n" is an integer and R, R1 and R11 are alkylene groups. The chlorosulphonated polyethylene composition is preferably applied in a solvent such as toluene in the presence of a small quantity of desiccant to absorb traces of water from the solvent, to the fabric. In the examples a composition comprising chlorosulphonated polyethylene, magnesia, an ultraviolet light inhibitor and mineral oil is dissolved in a toluene/butyl alcohol solvent and the solution is applied, three coats, to a woven nylon fabric to give a coating thickness of the order of 0.001 inches. The coated material is dusted with a finely divided starch derived from cereals and is then treated with a solution in toluene of a polyamide, or ethylene diamine or diethylene triamine or tetraethylene pentamine. After treatment with the polyamide or polyamine, the coated fabric is passed through a chamber at 212 DEG F. to drive off the toluene.
