Abstract
1,093,530. Seals. BETEILIGUNGSUND PATENTVERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. Feb. 23, 1966 [Feb. 24, 1965], No. 7967/66. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] A sealing arrangement between two relatively moving components and between two pressure chambers at different pressures to seal the chamber at the lower pressure from the chamber at the higher pressure, comprises, in its simplest form, a sealing strip 6, Fig. 3, loosely mounted in a recess 4 in one component 2 moving relatively to a second component 1. Initially the strip 6 lies parallel to the component 1 leaving a gap 3 therebetween through which a pressure drop occurs with the pressure dropping linearly towards the lower pressure chamber. At the same time the pressure in the higher pressure chamber is translated to the recess 4 behind the strip 6 and is unable to leave the recess since the strip is urgent to narrow the clearance between it and the low pressure end of the recess 4. The substantially constant pressure on the rear face of the strip acts in opposition to the pressure drop occurring on the front face of the strip to cause tilting of the strip and sealing engagement of the strip with the component 1 at that end adjacent the lower pressure chamber. The strip instead of being rectangular in crosssection may be trapezoidal and have a face adjacent the component 1 which slope towards the component 1 at the lower pressure chamber end of the strip. Alternatively the recess 4 may be obliquely positioned in the component 2 to give the same effect. In another embodiment, the strip may consist of a flexible tongue 9, Fig. 16, formed integral with a holding member 10 secured to the component 2 by a bolt 11. A hole 12 permits ingress of pressure into the recess 4 and a sealing cord 15 prevents egress therefrom. Two such tongues 9 may project in opposite directions from the holding member 10, with one tongue being operative when the pressure drop is in one direction and the other tongue operative when the pressure drop is in the other direction. Alternatively, there may be two holding members having a tongue on each, extending towards each other. The recess 4 is then divided into two by a web extending outwardly from the base of the recess. In a further embodiment, a projection on the rear face of a rectangular strip sealingly engages a groove in the bottom of the recess to divide the recess equally into two parts. The narrow sides of the strip are sealed against the sides of the recess and passages which cross each other connect the halves of the recesses to the gap 3.
